Band leader Dave Stradwick has gathered some of the finest exponents of the New Orleans style playing today to create his Sussex Jazz Kings – a line-up of talent on trumpet, trombone, clarinet, drums, string bass/sousaphone and banjo. The “Jazzers” are seasoned favourites at the Festival, blending serious musicianship with fun, humour and a packed dance floor.
Trumpeter Dave Stradwick, well-known for his hot jazz, was a member in the ’70s of the London-based The West End Stompers. In the ’80s he joined Tony Scrivans Vintage Jazz with Jack Gilbert and Ray Holland and became band leader. He was with Gambit and Papa Joes bands throughout the ’90s before deciding to move to the Sussex countryside and wind down the pace a little.
That isn’t quite how it worked out because he was inspired to form the Sussex Jazz Kings and he and his band are still one of the busiest bands on the circuit.
