Rodrigo: Guitar Concerto (Concierto de Aranjuez)
Tchaikovsky: Souvenir de Florence
Richard Strauss: Metamorphosen
GUITAR SOLOIST Mark Ashford
The Le Page Strings Ensemble led by David Le Page
Chobham’s lovely parish church will be candlelit for this concert featuring some of the most ravishing music ever composed for a solo guitar and strings, performed this evening by the internationally-renowned British classical guitarist, Mark Ashford.
The famous concerto, by the Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo, features a unsurpassed magical slow movement. Written in 1939, the concerto was inspired by the gardens of the Royal Palacio Real de Aranjuez in central Spain and Rodrigo described it as capturing “the fragrance of magnolias, the singing of birds, and the gushing of fountains”.
The programme also features two richly scored works for strings by Tchaikovsky and Richard Strauss. Strauss’s hauntingly beautiful Metamorphosen, considered by many as his greatest work, reflects his grief at the destruction in his native Munich during the dying days of the WW2. In contrast, the Souvenir de Florence was one of Tchaikovsky’s happiest works and is a piece full of joy, a celebration of his long fascination with Italy.
